Kitchen Lighting: What to Decide Before Your Cabinets Are Ordered

Lighting is the last thing most people think about in a kitchen project and one of the first things that has to be decided.
That is an awkward combination, and it is why so many finished kitchens have a beautiful countertop that nobody can see properly. By the time lighting comes up in most conversations, the cabinets are ordered, the electrical is roughed in, and the honest answer to "can we add lighting under the wall cabinets?" has become "yes, but."
None of this is complicated. It just has to happen in the right order. Here is what actually needs deciding while your kitchen is still on paper, and what can safely wait.
Why lighting gets decided too late
Kitchen design conversations follow a predictable path. Layout, then cabinetry, then countertops, then finishes. Lighting tends to arrive somewhere after backsplash, treated as a decorating decision, which is late in the sequence most kitchen projects follow.
The problem is that a good portion of kitchen lighting is not a decorating decision at all. It is a cabinetry decision and an electrical decision, and both of those are locked in early. Where the light hides, whether the cabinet has anything to hide it behind, where the wire runs and where the switch goes are all settled before anyone picks a pendant.
Wait too long and you are not choosing lighting anymore. You are working around choices that were already made for you.
The three kinds of light, in plain terms
You will hear these three words at every showroom, so it is worth thirty seconds on what they actually mean.
Ambient light is the general fill. Ceiling fixtures and recessed cans. It lets you walk in and see the room.
Task light is aimed at a work surface. Under-cabinet lighting is the main example, along with pendants over an island. This is the light you actually cook by.
Accent light is there to show something off. Interior lighting in a glass-front cabinet, a strip along a toe kick, a fixture chosen because it looks good.
Most disappointing kitchens have plenty of the first and almost none of the second. A room can be bright and still be badly lit, and the reason is almost always missing task light.
The lighting decisions that are really cabinetry decisions
This is the part that has to happen during design, because it changes what gets built.

Under-cabinet lighting: the question is where it hides
Under-cabinet lighting is the single highest-value lighting in a kitchen. It is also the one most affected by cabinetry, because a light fixture under a wall cabinet has to be concealed by something or you will see it from across the room.
Cabinets can be built or finished with a light rail, a small lip along the bottom edge that hides the fixture and the shadow line it casts. Some door styles include enough of a reveal to do this naturally. Others do not, and adding a rail later is a visible retrofit rather than part of the design.
So the question to raise during cabinetry selection is simple: if we put lighting under these wall cabinets, what conceals it? Ask it before the order, and it is a detail. Ask it after, and it is a compromise.
In-cabinet and glass-front lighting
If any cabinet has a glass front, lighting inside it stops being optional. An unlit glass cabinet in an otherwise lit kitchen reads as a dark hole, which is the opposite of the reason people choose glass.
Interior lighting has to be planned with the cabinet, because the wiring has to reach it, and the way it reaches it depends on where that cabinet sits in the run. This is also worth deciding honestly rather than aspirationally. Lit glass cabinetry means the inside of that cabinet is now on display permanently, which is a commitment about what lives in it.
Toe-kick lighting
A strip of light along the base of the cabinetry, washing the floor. It is pure accent, it does nothing for your prep work, and it is genuinely lovely at night when you want to see the kitchen without turning it on.
The reason it belongs on this list is that it is a wiring decision made at the same time as the cabinetry, and one that is nearly impossible to add later without pulling the base cabinets. Cheap to include, disproportionately expensive to regret.
Open shelving changes the problem
Open shelving is popular and it removes the thing under-cabinet lighting attaches to. If a run of wall cabinets is being replaced with open shelves, the task light for that counter has to come from somewhere else, usually the ceiling, and that has to be planned rather than discovered.
This is one of the more common late surprises we see. The shelving decision gets made for aesthetic reasons and quietly takes the counter lighting with it.
Where the shadows come from, and why it is usually you
Here is the thing nobody explains, and it makes everything else make sense.
Stand at your counter and look at what you are doing. Now think about where the ceiling lights are. In most kitchens they are behind you, which means your own body is between the light and the cutting board. You are standing in your own light, and no amount of additional ceiling fixtures fixes it, because they are all on the same side of you.
That is the entire argument for under-cabinet lighting. It comes from in front of and above the work surface, so nothing blocks it. It is not an upgrade or a luxury, it is the fix for a problem the ceiling cannot solve.
The island has the same problem with none of the same solution, because there is no cabinet overhead to hide a fixture under. That is why pendants over an island are doing real work rather than just looking good, and why the number and placement of them is worth talking through with your designer rather than picking at the end.
The same principle applies to the sink and the range. Both are places you stand and look down, and both benefit from light that is not coming from behind your shoulders.
Wiring: what has to happen before the walls close
This is where a homeowner's job is to raise the questions early, and an electrician's job is to answer them. We are cabinetry designers, not electricians, and the line matters.
What is worth knowing is that lighting systems differ in how they are powered. Some low-voltage kits are designed to plug into an existing outlet, which keeps them relatively simple. Hard-wired systems need to be wired in properly, and that is electrician work. Hardware Resources, one of the suppliers we work with, makes this distinction explicitly in its own guidance for the trade, and it is the distinction that determines how much has to happen before the drywall goes up.

Three things worth raising with your electrician while the walls are still open:
Where the switches go, and what each one controls. This is a design question disguised as an electrical one. Being able to turn on just the under-cabinet lighting at night, without lighting the whole room, is the difference between a kitchen you use in the evening and one you avoid.
Where the power supply lives. Low-voltage systems need a transformer somewhere, and somewhere usually means inside a cabinet. Decide which cabinet loses a corner to it, rather than finding out later.
What is being added to which circuit. Kitchens accumulate load. Your electrician will tell you what your specific situation requires, and that conversation is much cheaper before the walls close than after.
We will happily flag where the cabinetry needs to accommodate all of this. What we will not do is tell you what your electrical system can carry, because that is a question for a licensed electrician looking at your actual panel.
Controls: dimming, and the thing people mix up
Dimming is worth having on nearly everything. A kitchen at seven in the morning and the same kitchen at ten at night want very different amounts of light, and a dimmer is the cheapest way to get both.
There is one distinction worth getting straight, because the two terms are used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. Dimming changes how bright a light is. Tunable-white changes the color of the light, from warmer to cooler. Hardware Resources makes the point in its own designer guidance that while tunable-white lighting can be dimmed, dimmable lighting is not necessarily tunable. If being able to shift the warmth of the light matters to you, that has to be specified deliberately, because a dimmer alone will not do it.
Tunable-white systems are typically controlled by remote, by a smart speaker, or through a home automation app. Whether that is a feature or a future annoyance depends entirely on the household, and it is worth being honest with yourself about which one you are.
Keeping the light consistent
One last thing that costs nothing to get right and is genuinely difficult to fix afterward.
Buy the lighting as a system rather than assembling it from whatever was convenient. Mixing sources from different manufacturers, bought at different times, is the most common reason a kitchen ends up with light that does not match, one stretch of counter reading warmer than the next. It is subtle, it is impossible to unsee, and replacing half of it later rarely fixes it because the original half has aged.
Pick one approach, apply it across the whole room, and get it on the same plan.
What to bring to your design appointment
You do not need to have chosen anything. You do need to be able to answer these.
When do you actually use the kitchen? A household cooking dinner in winter darkness has different needs from one that mostly uses the room in daylight.
Where do you really work? Point at the counter you prep on. That is the one that needs task light, whatever the plan says.
Is there glass in the cabinetry? If yes, interior lighting is part of the conversation, not an add-on.
Are any wall cabinets being replaced with open shelving? If yes, we need another source of light for that counter.
Who else is in the room, and when? Lighting zones are really about not blasting the whole kitchen when one person wants coffee.
Do you want to be able to change the warmth of the light, or just the brightness? This is the tunable-white question, and it is much easier answered now.
Bring lighting into the conversation early
The reason to raise all of this early is not that lighting is complicated. It is that the decisions are split across three different jobs: the cabinetry we design, the wiring your electrician runs, and the fixtures you choose. Nobody owns the whole picture by default, which is exactly how it ends up being nobody's job until it is too late to do it well.
Most of it gets resolved at a design table with the cabinetry in front of you. Whether a door style has the reveal to conceal an under-cabinet fixture. How a glass-front cabinet is built and what its interior would actually put on display. Where a run of wall cabinets ends, and what happens to the counter beyond it. These are questions you settle by looking at the cabinetry and the plan together, alongside someone who will tell you which choices are about to close off which options.
